Doctor Who Gave Fake Cancer Treatments Gets 45 Years In Prison

A Michigan doctor was recently sentenced to 45 years in prison for falsely diagnosing his patients with cancer, then giving them chemotherapy treatments to defraud Medicaid and private insurance companies. According to the authorities, the doctor had misdiagnosed patients with multiple myeloma, a terminal blood cancer. Over the course of several years, the doctor defrauded $17.6 million, which he will now owe in restitution.

One of the patients, who did not have cancer, received chemotherapy treatments that made his teeth fall out. In addition to losing his teeth, the treatments caused a slight facial disfigurement. Another patient being treated for testicular cancer had one testicle removed when the surgery was not necessary. Other patients who visited the doctor did have cancer, and the excessive treatments only caused the number of tumors to increase. Some of the patients died extremely sick from unnecessary treatments.

Staffers working for the doctor eventually exposed him. However, the damage had already been done to numerous patients, some who will have permanent effects from the treatments. In 2013, a team of FBI agents arrived to arrest the cancer doctor at his clinic.

What Are The Effects Of Chemotherapy?

Chemotherapy can involve several different drugs and the side effects can vary. However, some of the patients treated by the Michigan doctor may have experienced sores in the mouth and throat, fatigue, vomiting, hair loss, cognitive problems, weight loss, and permanent organ damage. In women, chemotherapy can cause permanent sexual and reproductive problems.

Doctors are supposed to abide by the Hippocratic Oath, always taking care of patients and doing everything in their power to save lives. This doctor violated that oath, and his patients will live with consequences for the rest of their lives.
