There Are No Accidents
Every day, senseless tragedies happen. One 13-year old girl was crossing the street to catch her school bus. As she started in the crosswalk, a driver turning right at a red light clipped her with the car’s mirror, knocking her to the ground. Another motorist traveling close behind the first did not stop before turning and could not see the young girl on the ground. His car ran over the girl, killing her instantly.
Police called the collision a “horrible accident.” But the girl’s death was not an “accident.” Accidents are defined as “unexpected and undesirable events.” While clearly undesirable, how can one say that the tragic results of the drivers’ blatant disregard for the rules of the road was unexpected? This traffic collision was a horrendous and brutal event, with a clear human cause.
Similar tragedies are often mischaracterized as “accidents.” Serious injuries, deaths, and huge financial losses are brought upon innocent victims because of another’s negligence. Whether it is the driver behind the wheel, a professional who fails to properly advise his client, or a doctor who fails to follow proper medical safety procedures, those who don’t behave responsibly must be held responsible for the consequences.
At Shapiro Law Group, we passionately oppose the mischaracterization of such wrongdoings. The word “accident” trivializes the consequences of negligence and sends a message suggesting that wrongdoers have no control over the damage they do.
Our attorneys work tirelessly to ensure that those who hurt others through irresponsible behavior do not go on to create similar pain in someone else’s life. The rules and procedures designed to protect individuals and society can only be effective when followed by all. Only by holding those who fail to follow those rules legally accountable can we ensure they think twice before breaking the rules again.
